A recent study reveals that individuals who stop using popular weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt traditional lifestyle plans.
Findings released in a major medical journal demonstrates that while overweight individuals often shed a large proportion of their body weight while on the medication, the weight returns at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"Individuals buying these medications must be informed of the risk of fast weight regain when the treatment concludes," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain means a reversion to starting weight in about a year and a half.
Comparing Approaches
The research, which looked at dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.
The team note that individuals who lose weight through dieting usually experience a more gradual weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
The Reason for the Fast Rebound
Nutrition scientists suggest the mechanism of the jabs explains the heightened weight return.
These medications copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls appetite.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and may also reduce responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' means appetite is unsuppressed, making binge eating much more probable."
A Chronic Disease?
Health authorities advise the injections for individuals with weight-linked health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals argue that, due to the high risk of relapse, the treatment might need to be ongoing.
This perspective is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "emphasize the chronic nature of obesity," akin to managing conditions like diabetes.
Patient Testimonies
Users who have come off the jabs explain a sudden return of appetite.
"I experienced a trigger that goes on and you're instantly starving," described one woman.
The struggle is exacerbated if individuals have not established permanent lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.
Significant Adoption
Figures show that a significant number of people in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with desire remaining high.
- Use is greater among females than men.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
- Many obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
In conclusion, researchers caution that while the jabs are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent cure and maintained weight loss likely depends on ongoing behavioural changes.
